Donation Eligibility & Limits (Calgary municipal election)

  • Who can donate:
    Alberta residents, Alberta corporations that do business in Alberta, and Alberta trade unions/employee organizations. Prohibited: charities, municipalities, provincial health/education agencies, out-of-province individuals or organizations, and corporations that don’t do business in Alberta. Elections Calgary

  • How much you can give:
    Individuals (per calendar year): up to $5,000 total across all council candidates (mayor + councillors), plus $5,000 to public school board candidates, $5,000 to separate school board candidates, and $5,000 to registered local political parties. Elections Calgary
    AB corporations / trade unions / employee orgs (for the 2024–2025 campaign period combined): up to $5,000 total to all council candidates; $5,000 to public school board; $5,000 to separate school board. Elections Calgary

  • Receipts & records:
    We issue a receipt for every contribution and record your full name and Alberta address, as required. Elections Calgary

  • Use your own funds:
    You cannot donate money that isn’t yours or funds given to you by someone else to pass along. Elections Calgary

  • Not a charity receipt:
    Municipal campaign contributions are not charitable donations (no CRA charitable tax receipt).

Attestations

  • I am donating my own funds (or I’m authorized to donate on behalf of an eligible AB corporation/trade union/employee organization). Elections Calgary

  • I am eligible under Alberta’s Local Authorities Election Act and understand the applicable contribution limits above. Elections Calgary

  • I understand this is not a charitable donation and a standard campaign receipt will be issued.
